Chinese people tend to forget characters throughout their lives because of technological progress: mobile phones, laptops, Ipads, etc. According to the video, not only can’t older people write down some characters, but also lots of teenagers find it difficult to remember such widely used characters as, for example, a tooth paste, obscene, etc. In my opinion, it’s becoming a national problem in China.
Nowadays, there are lots of surveys in China that draw people’s attention to characters and their remembrance. To begin with, such surveys have several goals to achieve: to show the Chinese people how the world has influenced their culture and language and what can be solved or done to prevent such problems to occur in the nearest future. For example, the number of people using laptops and gadgets has increased for the recent fifteen years and that is why the need in handwriting slightly decreases over the years. People would rather text each other in their gadgets than write something down. Moreover, lots of papers and home assignments nowadays are ‘written’ digitally and it occurs not only in China, but also around the world. However, China suffers from ‘digital effects’ most of all because Chinese characters are a totally different phenomenon from the Roman script where characters need to be repeated occasionally. Thus, some people claim it’s a normal situation, they say China must move with the times.

However, there is another point of view which I totally agree with. Mobile devices lead to the increase of illiteracy. For example, handwriting itself stimulates our brain to effectively memorize words whereas typing, in reverse, helps those people who are illiterate to correct their grammatical mistakes (the T9 system). What should then China do having one of the longest language history in the world? If we take children, we can see that they are becoming lazier because they’d rather type than write down characters. What’s the point in learning and writing a certain number of characters (2000-3000) at school which allow pupils to fully communicate with each other if they are going to be not so necessary because of using gadgets sooner or later? In addition, children are taught to write characters at schools, but as a teenager’s life goes further, it doesn’t require as much knowledge in writing characters as being able to simply recognize them and know how they are pronounced(pinyin).

In conclusion, I believe that children at least should be limited in the time they spent on using their devices until there comes the right time for the technological progress to gradually solve this problem.

Resources for Using English

The site I'd like to share with everyone is all about listening but not a simple one. The site specializes in listening to people from different countries, thus, providing a listener with the opportunity to differenciate the accents of some speakers. For example, we can turn on a conversation where one of the interlocutors can be from Sydney and the other one from Edinburgh. So, the site creates a very natural atmosphere where a person becomes completely involved into listening to different accents as if it is happening in real life. We can choose seven options of difficulty depending on the level of a listener. I do recommend everyone to challenge themselves by reaching the last level which is the toughest one. Undoubtedly, regular listening to the audio files which,by the way, are absolutely free to use here will enhance listening skills and familiarize people with lots of accents.

How my writing skills have changed

It’s great that we live in the era of technology nowadays, because there have been many things which I’ve learned this year using my computer and smartphone and I’ve successfully implemented them into my projects and essays, making them more structuralized and logical.     First things first, I’ve had a wonderful opportunity to improve my writing skills this year. Writing has always been my weak side as I considered the handwriting method to be an obsolete one. Thus, such an essential aspect of the English language didn’t elicit my interest at all and that is why I hated writing huge essays. However, everything changed when it was announced that I would work on my writing skills using technology. I realized then how great, fast and convenient it would be to study in such an entertaining way! Secondly, this course allows me to put a lot of words that I’ve previously learned into practice!   The method of memorizing lexis by using it in essays results in enriching my...

1 . Cousteau said that the Antarctic is an important area on our planet which contains the largest amount of ice on Earth. Ice itself creates/makes a balance between the cold ocean water and the warm tropic water by letting the cold ocean water cool the warmer one and, thus, preventing the temperature from either going up or down. But nowadays, it's getting harder to find this naturally created equilibrium because of the human's factor.
